Holiday Job Search

Holiday Job Search Techniques Topic of next Transitions Meeting

Thinking about taking a seasonal hiatus from your job search? Think again. Contrary to popular belief, the holiday season is not the time to take time off from your job search.

According to the job seeking support group, The Five O’Clock Club, “Hiring managers know that you are serious about finding a job, if you are searching during the holidays. They will take you more seriously and respect you for your perseverance.”

Cyndi McCabe, the placement coordinator in Lorain County Community College’s Employment and Career Services office said that there are many benefits to conducting a job search during the holiday season. For example:

  • Some corporate departments feel pressure to fill openings before the first of the year in order to secure remaining budget and headcount allocation.
  • There's generally less competition as many others have taken a job search hiatus during the holidays.
  • Laying the groundwork now can help secure a job during the prime hiring months directly following the New Year.
  • Short-term seasonal jobs could be a foot in the door for a longer-term opportunity.

“The holiday season is also a great time of year for networking, with an abundance of parties, special events, and family gatherings. This time of year creates opportunities to connect with people that you would not normally see on a daily basis,” McCabe said.

To learn more about holiday job search and networking techniques attend the next Transition meeting at 7 p.m., Monday, Dec. 10 in room 228 of LCCC’s College Center.

Transitions, a FREE networking group for business professionals, is sponsored by LCCC’s Employment and Career Services office. Transitions meetings feature short seminars on topics relevant to a successful job search, job leads and support, and networking contacts.
