TIME TO REGISTER FOR THE 18TH ANNUAL LEGO OLYMPIAD
It’s time for Lego teams to register for the 18th annual Lorain County Community College Lego Olympiad. This year’s event will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 1:45 p.m., Friday, April 11 in the LCCC Field House.
The entry fee is $4 per person and there will be no registration the day of the event. The deadline to register is Friday, March 21 for all divisions.
The Lego Olympiad is for students K-12 and is a design and building contest using Lego-type construction components.
This event is hosted by the student chapter of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers at LCCC. It is sponsored by Nordson Corporation.
The aim is to provide an engineering-related activity that exposes students to the world of mechanisms, machinery, moving parts, design, teamwork, planning, and construction techniques in a competitive environment. Highlights include trophies and awards presented at the end of the contest.
The Lego Olympiad includes three divisions – Computer Controlled, Theme, and Open. Entries in Computer Controlled must utilize a computer to control at least one electric motor. Control options include MindStorm, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) or Computer-based interfaces.
For the Theme division, a specific theme will be announced at the start of the contest. Team members must then work together to design, document, and then construct a project based on the theme. This division challenges the team’s ability to solve problems under pressure. There will be up to three theme division categories organized by school grade.
The Computer Controlled and Theme divisions are open to students in grades 4-12.
The Open division allows students in grades K-8 to compete using their own personal Legos and/or those supplied by their school. Open division participants can compete on an individual basis or in teams of up to five members.
