NEXT LCCC POLICE TRAINING ACADEMYCLASS BEGINS APRIL 8
The next Lorain County Community College Police Training Academy begins Tuesday, April 8 for those interested in a law enforcement career. The academy trains recruits to become basic patrol officers.
Up to 28 recruits per class can be accommodated in the LCCC Police Training Academy. Individuals can apply to the academy two ways: as a sponsored recruit by a local police department, or through open enrollment for those with no affiliation to a police department.
Those who are seeking entrance through open enrollment should contact the Academy immediately as their enrollment package must be completed before admittance to the Academy. All applicants must also meet physical conditioning standards before entering the Academy.
Recruits will go through 650 hours of training during the 16-week, full-time program. The training will cover all areas that are mandated by the Ohio Police Officers Training Commission (OPOTC), which oversees police training in Ohio. These areas are: physical conditioning, administration, legal, diversity/human relations, firearms, driving, subject control, first aid, patrol, civil disorders, traffic and investigation.
Upon successful completion of the Police Training Academy, graduates will be awarded certificates that allow them to take the Ohio Peace Officers Examination. Graduates will also be awarded 12 hours of equivalent criminal justice class credit.
Tuition for the Police Academy is $3,800 for open enrollment students. This includes all required firearms ammunition, copies of the Ohio Revised Criminal and Traffic Code as well as other classroom reference material. In addition, a partial uniform consisting of LCCC Police Training Academy shirts, hats and physical conditioning shorts will be provided. Students must provide their own handguns, duty gear (belt, holsters, handcuffs), ear and eye protection as well as uniform pants and black law enforcement style shoes or boots.
