It is one of only 30 labs in the world of its kind operating in cooperation with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
This year’s FamilyFest will again include a salute our students who are military veterans. The Veterans Salute will be presented on the main stage at approximately noon and will feature LCCC Professor and Vietnam Veteran Bruce Weigl greeting and honoring our men and women in uniform.
Following that event on the Courtyard Stage, the LCCC Scholar Salute will be held from 1-1:30 p.m. Scholar Salute honors top high school graduates in Lorain County as well as Post Secondary Enrollment Options students and Early College High School students. Maureen Kyle, a reporter on WKYC TV Channel 3 will emcee the Scholar Salute event.
Entertainment on the Courtyard Stage will begin at about 2 p.m. with local folk singer Jeff Sherman, followed by Creative Rhythm leading a drum circle at 3 p.m. The drum circle features a percussion event complete with audience participation. Colin Dussault’s Blues Project will wrap up the musical entertainment on the Courtyard Stage from 4-6 p.m.
Art Fest at FamilyFest, now in its fourth year, will be held in the Stocker Arts Center. It will include art demonstrations and items for sale by LCCC arts faculty and instructors in the LifeLong Learning program. There will also be live music in the Stocker Arts Center lobby during the Art Fest.
As usual at FamilyFest, kids’ activities abound. The Discovery Tent, located next to the Amphitheatre Stage, will have lots of free hands-on activities for the kids, a family picnic area, art demonstrations and activities, safety presentations and services and much more. And, several cartoon characters will make appearances during FamilyFest throughout the day.
For the second year, our pint-sized guests are encouraged to come dressed in costumes for the campus-wide trick-or-treat event presented by LCCC’s Student Life. The trick-or-treat event will run all day until candy runs out. LCCC students will lead the kids all over campus to collect treats from costumed hosts.
Since it was so well received last year, the Cake Walk – a long-time FamilyFest tradition – will change to a Pie Walk and again feature Mama Joe’s Pies. The Pie Walk event is a “musical chairs” type of activity where participants can win pies from Mama Joe’s Pies. LCCC’s Staff Council sponsors the Pie Walk. The Pie Walk tent will be located just outside the Nord Advanced Technologies Center building.
The Pony Rides will be located in the University Center courtyard near the Physical Science and Health Science buildings. Tickets for Pony Rides and Inflatable attractions will be $1 each. Coupons will be available at www.lorainccc.edu/familyfest to download.
Another event to continue in its second year is the Gamers Fest, held in the Spitzer Conference Center. It will give kids a chance to try out some favorite Nintendo Wii games and test their dance skills on Dance Dance Revolution. Faculty from LCCC’s software development programs will demonstrate games they developed and provide information to kids aspiring to make a career in video game development.
At the end of the day several game systems will be raffled off at the Gamers Fest. Raffle tickets will be available at the fest for those who play or can be downloaded at www.lorainccc.edu/familyfest.
And don’t forget to check out the LCCC academic divisions including demonstrations in Engineering, Allied Health and Nursing and others. Plus, more than 45 community organizations will be on campus in the Courtyard Tent. You can get info about all kinds of services that are available to you as a Lorain County resident.
In the event of rain, the Courtyard Stage entertainment, Scholar Salute and LCCC Military Veterans Salute will be moved inside to the Stocker Arts Center stage.
