Atlantic Records Recording Artists
Straight No Chaser

Saturday, September 26, 2009 – 7:30 p.m.

You may have seen them perform their now-famous version of The 12 Days of Christmas on TNT's Christmas in Washington last December, or you might be among the more than 9 million people who have viewed the clip of their version of 12 Days… which interpolates Toto’s Africa in the song on YouTube (link below), or they may be totally new to you. Whether you've heard the group before or not, you are in for a musical treat when you hear them live at Stocker Arts Center. In an age when so much music is the product of digital processing and re-tooling, Straight No Chaser is the real deal - the captivating sound of ten unadulterated human voices coming together to make extraordinary music with a sense of humor. The group originally formed in 1996 while students at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, and has reemerged after the YouTube phenomenon of The 12 Days of Christmas. They released Holiday Spirits on Atlantic Records in October 2008, and plan to release a new CD in Spring 2010. Their stop at Stocker is part of a 50 plus city tour.   http://www.sncmusic.com/

The Wedding Singer

Monday, October 5, 2009 – 7:30 p.m.

It's 1985, and rock-star wannabe Robbie Heart is New Jersey's favorite wedding singer. He's the life of the party until his own fiancé leaves him at the altar. Shot through the heart, Robbie makes every wedding as disastrous as his own. When he meets Julia, an admiring young waitress, it's love at first sight. Only trouble is Julia is about to be married to a Wall Street shark, and unless Robbie can pull off the performance of a decade the girl of his dreams will be gone forever. With music and lyrics that pay loving homage to the pop songs of the 1980's, The Wedding Singer takes us back to a time when hair was big, greed was good, collars were up, and a wedding singer might just be the coolest guy in the room. http://www.obbnyc.com/

Canadian Brass

Thursday, January 21, 2010 – 7:30 p.m.

The virtuosi of the Canadian Brass have made the quintet an exciting vehicle for serious concert music. The group sprang from modest and highly experimental roots in Toronto, Ontario, in 1970. Thanks to their pioneer status, they developed a unique character and rapport with audiences that proved so successful that it has been emulated by many other ensembles. The quintet, having celebrated more than 35 seasons, has a long history of recording classical repertoire. The Canadian Brass master the gamut of concert presentations — from formal classical concerts to music served up with lively dialogue and theatrical effects. Their more than 60 recordings to date include works by Purcell, Vivaldi, Pachelbel, Beethoven and Wagner, all in meticulously crafted transcriptions that are setting new musical traditions in brass performance. The "fabulous five" spend most of their time on tour, and have performed all over the world, gaining an international following for their performances, which offer a large variety of musical styles. No matter what the style, the music is central and performed with utmost dedication and excellence. Their next album, coming soon, is called Swing That Music – A Tribute to Louis Armstrong.   http://www.canbrass.com/

Simply Sinatra with Steve Lippia

Friday, April 9, 2010 – 7:30 p.m.

One of today's most prominent in-demand vocalists, Steve Lippia has quickly established his place among the finest interpreters of standards and traditional pop music in the nation. With his own, unique style, he relives the heyday of Frank Sinatra. Steve's youthful, energetic talent and powerful show creates a perfect blend of "classic" with "today," introducing a new generation to this timeless music and transporting long-time listeners back to the era of "Ol Blue Eyes." With great stage presence, Steve Lippia pulls his audience back in time to a comfort zone rarely seen on concert stages today.  His music is delivered in a deeply personal way including standards engraved in the American History of Music: I’ve Got You Under My Skin, The Lady Is A Tramp, That’s Life, My Way. It all comes back to us through Steve’s work. Reminiscent of the young Sinatra, Steve Lippia moves from crisp, popping swing tunes to lush, poignant ballads with equanimity. With a hot, driving band behind him, Steve impeccably interprets the best repertoire of the Big Band era and American Classic Pop, leaving his audience begging for more.
