LCCC Celebrates the Life of Martin Luther King, Jr. with Week of Events 

A myriad of events are planned Tuesday, January 19 through Friday, January 22 at Lorain County Community College to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The events are part of the spring semester’s Welcome Week and are sponsored by the Student Life office.  Below is a listing of activities for the week, but the most current schedule can be found at www.lorainccc.edu/studentlife. Or call Student Life at 440-366-4036 for more information.

Tuesday, January 19, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Stocker Center Lobby

Activities taking place throughout the day include: 

  • A video of Dr. King’s last speech 
  • “A Dream Music Video”
  • A slideshow entitled, “How Long? Not Long!” 
  • A video of Stevie Wonder singing “Happy Birthday” in honor of Dr. King 
  • Student testimonials: “What Does Dr. King’s Legacy Mean to You?” Student Life will pose this question to students passing through the lobby
  • Refreshments
  • Registration for volunteer activities for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service to take place on Friday, January 22.
  • A skit, “Why Should I Care About Dr. King?” will take place at noon.

Wednesday, January 20, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Stocker Cinema Hall 

  • Entertainment, refreshments and socialization around the themes of Dr. King
  • Motivational speaker Roger Campbell will present “What Would Dr. King’s Dream be Today?” from 12-1 p.m.

Thursday, January 21, 12-2 p.m., (classroom site to be determined)

  • Get to Know Dr. King” workshop 
  • Dialogue on the Dr. King’s legacy – 12-12:30 p.m.
  • Skit – 12:30-1 p.m.
  • Dialogue – 1-1:30 p.m.
  • Trivia game with prizes – 1:30-2 p.m.

Friday, January 22, 11:55 a.m., Stocker Arts Center

  • Moment of silence for Dr. King and other who fought for freedom 
  • Motivational speaker and Dr. King impersonator Marvin Blanks will give a presentation – 12-1 p.m., Stocker Center
     
  • Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service – To register, visit www.lorainccc.edu/mlk or call Caitlin Lambert at (440) 366-4104. The Day of Service is sponsored by LCCC Service Learning. Volunteer activities include:
    • Painting rooms at Haven Center for the Homeless, 9-11:30 a.m. or 1:30-4:30 p.m., 1536 E. 30th St., Lorain
    • Canvassing neighborhoods around LCCC for canned goods, 9-11:30 a.m.
    • Painting two rooms at Blessing House Children’s Home, 9-11:30 a.m., 5540 Grove Ave., Lorain
    • Tutor and work with children at Save Our Children’s afterschool program on the topic of Dr. King, 4-5:30 p.m., 1621 Middle Ave., Elyria
    • Cleaning and disinfecting facilities with youth participants at Harrison Cultural Center, time to be announced, 1922 Hamilton Ave., Lorain
    • Preparing and serving lunch to clients at Lorain Family Center, 1 a.m. to 1 p.m., 203 W. 8th St., Elyria
    • Volunteers are invited to attend a celebration luncheon 12-1 p.m. at the Spitzer Conference Center.
