SKIPPYJON JONES
9:45 a.m. and 11:45 a.m., Friday, February 3
Skippyjon Jones is a little kitten with big ears and even bigger dreams. Sometimes he pretends to be a bird, sometimes he pretends to be a llama, and sometimes he pretends to be a whale… anything but a Siamese cat. He becomes convinced that he is a Chihuahua, and not just any Chihuahua but the greatest canine sword fighter in old Mexico. But when the local Chihuahuas are terrorized by a gigantic bee, will Skippyjon be a ‘fraidy-cat’ or the top dog? Based on the book by Judy Schachner, this musical is about unleashing your imagination and following your dreams. This show is being performed by Theatreworks USA and is recommended for children in grades K-3.
FREEDOM BOUND
9:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., Monday, February 6
There is a story connected with the Underground Railroad in countless communities throughout the north. Old houses have secret tunnels leading into the woods or attics with hidden stairways. This exciting and turbulent period of history is the subject of “Freedom Bound,” a play with music by Mad River Theater Works. “Freedom Bound” revolves around the most famous incident in the history of the Underground Railroad in Ohio: the story of Addison White, an escaped slave, and his rescue by the citizens of the town of Mechanicsburg, Ohio. There, he was befriended by a farmer named Udney Hyde. He lived in Hyde’s barn, working for his meals by day and learning to read and write with the help of Hyde’s daughter, Amanda, by night. “Freedom Bound” brings history to life through drama and music, as well as riddles and rhyme, and creates an array of characters that pop right out of the past to relive the adventure of the Underground Railroad right before your eyes. Performed by Mad River Theater Works, this show is recommended for children in grades 3 and up.
FISH FACE
9:45 a.m. and 11:45 a.m., Wednesday, February 15
“Fish Face” is part of the popular "Kids of the Polk Street School" series by two-time Newbery Honor-winning author Patricia Reilly Giff. Emily Arrow can do plenty of things well when she has Uni – her toy unicorn – to bring her good luck. She’s one of the fastest runners around, she’s great at math, and she hardly ever gets into trouble. But when Dawn Bosco appears, everything changes. The new girl seems to be good at everything. She even beats Emily in a race. Worst of all, Emily discovers that Dawn has stolen her unicorn! Will anyone believe Emily if she reveals Dawn’s terrible secret? In her efforts to understand why Dawn stole from her, Emily learns a few things about honesty and growing up. Maybe Dawn needs a friend, and maybe Emily doesn’t really need Uni after all. Addressing serious issues with a winningly light touch, “Fish Face” sparkles with lively wit. This show is recommended for children in grades 1-4 and will be performed by ArtsPower touring company.
