Jack Nicklaus Scholarship Golf Outing

Press Release

Posted: July 30, 2013

The 23rd annual LCCC/Jack Nicklaus Scholarship Golf Benefit, presented by First Place Bank, is set for Monday, August 5 at the Elyria Country Club. This year’s event features golf pro Fred Funk.

The LCCC Jack Nicklaus Scholarship Golf Benefit is one of the longest-standing golf events in Lorain County and Northeast Ohio.  This will be another exciting day of golf in support of scholarships for Lorain County Community College and its University Partnership students.

In 1990, Jack Nicklaus helped raise more than $100,000 to establish the Jack Nicklaus Scholarship Fund at the LCCC Foundation. Since that time this fund has provided more than 750 LCCC and University Partnership students with scholarships and other financial assistance.

Fred Funk turned pro in 1981 and has become one of professional golf’s most recognized and respected players.  Funk began his professional golf career as a teacher at the University of Maryland, where he was the school’s Golf Coach from 1982 to 1988.  After earning his PGA Tour card in 1989, he played in more than 29 events every year from 1989 – 2006.

Before winning 8 times on the PGA Tour and 5 times on the Champions Tour, Funk won two Maryland Opens (1983, 1987).  Funk led the PGA Tour in driving accuracy more than five times and was in the top 10 for 17 straight seasons (1991-2007).  His enthusiasm for the game, motivation to improve, and determination to contend are all part of a personality that draws people to him and has established Funk as a fan favorite.

“Lorain County Community College is committed to providing learning opportunities for students from all backgrounds and at all educational levels,” said Tracy Green, LCCC Vice President for Strategic and Institutional Development. “For more than two decades the impact of the Jack Nicklaus Endowment fund has been remarkable – awarding more than 750 students with scholarships based on need, talent, and potential.  The generous support and participation is crucial in helping our students enrich their lives, pursue their educational goals and contribute to the strengthening of our community”

Other pros who have hosted the event include Nicklaus, Greg Norman, Lee Trevino, Chi Chi Rodriguez, Phil Mickelson, Jan Stephenson, Jack Nicklaus II, Ian Baker Finch, Andy Bean, Ben Curtis, Tom Weiskopf, Janice Moodie, Andy North, Bobby Clampett and Mike Zeigler.

The event will be a five-man, best ball format with full handicap considered. Maximum handicap is 24.
