Senior Adults Generating Eloquence (SAGEs)
Celebrating the wisdom and knowledge of Lorain County Senior Citizens
Did you know that . . .
- In 2005, 6% of the U.S. population was 75 and older; this age group is expected to make up 11.6% of the population in 2050.
- In 1980, more than 2 million people were 85 and older; by 2005, this group had grown to 5.1 million. Of these, 65,000 were 100 years of age and older.
- The 85-and-older population is the fastest growing age group in the United States.
- 13.5% of the Lorain County population, or roughly 41,000 people, are 65 years of age or older.*
Senior Adults Generating Eloquence (SAGEs) is a program that spotlighted the learning stories of citizens in Lorain County who were 60 years of age or older. The project:
- Solicited written narratives from Lorain County senior citizens on the question “What is the most significant learning experience you have ever had?”
- Created a short film on the project and 3 winning essayists (who will each received $1,000);
- Honored the authors on May 6, 2010 at LCCC with keynote speaker Barbara Riley, executive director of the Ohio Department of Aging.
