Computer Information Systems FAQ

Do your friends and family come to you with computer questions?  Do you get a sense of satisfaction when you have solved their problems?  If so, imagine working some day as the go-to “tech person” at a company or institution where the flow of information is critical to its mission.  At LCCC, you will study computer science, business and communications. Along the way, you might focus on one specialty such as web development or digital communications.  However, regardless of your focus, you will acquire strong technical and communication skills.

In computer and information technology, you will focus on how information and computing systems support business, research and communications needs.  Instruction ranges from the basics of computer hardware to the complex relationship between humans and computers.  Since computer and information technology involves taking core courses in several different departments, many students end up with a specialty or track in one area of interest.  For example, you may decide to specialize in Web development and take classes such as Web page design and database development for the Web.  On the other hand, you may be drawn to software development or take classes in network communications technology.

Career Areas to Explore

Software and Web Development

Associate of Applied Business in Web Development
The Web development degree prepares students for development, administration and support positions in the emerging digital economy.  Students learn to design and develop Internet applications in a client/server environment.  Additional topics covered include integrating Internet and enterprise-wide databases, middleware issues, building robust Internet applications, and designing dynamic web portals.  Varieties of elective courses are available to augment the program.

Associate of Applied Business in Software Development
The software development major prepares students for programming on computer platforms from microcomputers to mainframes.  Students will learn to design and develop software using the procedural and object-oriented languages most commonly used in business.  Additional topics covered include database design, development and an introduction to networking.

Certificate of Completion - Information Systems Support
To help businesses succeed and empower their personnel in a technology-rich work environment, highly skilled employees are needed to provide support to the non-technical workforce. This certificate is designed to provide the breadth of technical and user application focus to enable the graduate to provide such support. Upon successful completion the student will have developed the skills necessary to support the non-technical users' workspace including software, networking, small scale application development needs and basic hardware.

Associate of Applied Business in Network Communications Technology
The network communications technology major prepares students for network and microcomputer support positions in business and industry.  You will learn to design, install, test, and manage local and wide area networks.  Additional topics covered include software installation, multimedia development fundamentals, and web page design.  Varieties of elective courses are available to augment the program.

Computer Maintenance and Networking

The Computer Maintenance and Networking (CMNW) program in the Engineering Technologies division offers state of the art instruction and practical hands-on experience in computer science, computer systems, networking technologies and A+ certification. Some of the technologies and skills covered in our courses and laboratories include:

  • Computer forensics
  • Wireless communications, installation and troubleshooting
  • Satellite communications, dish and receiver installation and troubleshooting
  • C++ object-oriented programming for hardware interfacing

Computer Maintenance and Networking Programs Include:

A+ Certification
A+ certification is a widely accepted certification that demonstrates expert knowledge of hardware technologies. This is an excellent certification for anyone looking to enter into the world of information technology. A+ certification requires you to demonstrate knowledge of installing, configuring, upgrading, troubleshooting and repairing desktop systems.  The LCCC A+ certification requires completion of only two courses, and credits can apply toward LCCC's Computer Maintenance and Networking Certificate of Completion, Certificate of Proficiency and Associate's Degree programs.

This program may be completed on campus or online.

Certificate of Completion in Computer Maintenance and Networking
The Computer Maintenance and Networking (CMNW) Certificate of Completion is designed to provide the student with the knowledge and practical skills necessary for entry-level employment in the areas of installation, upgrading and maintaining personal computer systems and networks. Lorain County Community College has articulation agreements with colleges and universities including programs offered by LCCC's University Partnership.

Certificate of Proficiency in Computer Maintenance and Networking
This program is designed to provide students with the knowledge and practical skills to install, upgrade, and maintain personal computer systems and networks. Lorain County Community College has articulation agreements with colleges and universities including programs offered by Lorain County Community College's University Partnership.

Associate of Applied Science in Electronic Engineering Technology (Computer Maintenance and Networking)
The computer maintenance and networking program provides a solid foundation in the principles of electronics, with an emphasis on the installation, maintenance, and repair of computer systems, networks, and associated equipment.  Along with a broad, general electronics background, students are given comprehensive information and training in computer system structure, peripheral device operation, installation procedures, and troubleshooting practices through this extensive, hands-on oriented curriculum.  Typical job titles include computer systems specialist, computer maintenance technician, field service representative, installation technician, field engineer, systems integrator and applications specialist.

Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems, Networking Option From the Univeristy of Akron through LCCC's Univeristy Partnership
Many companies in Ohio and nationwide are providing career opportunities for highly trained professionals in the field of computer networking and network security – positions filled by graduates of The University of Akron's Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems, Networking Option. Companies want and need technically qualified people to help them compete at the highest possible levels of quality and productivity in today's extremely competitive world marketplace.

Computer Science and Engineering

Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Engineering
From the University of Toledo through LCCC's University Partnership
The Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) is an interdisciplinary field, which deals with the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of computing hardware and software.  In this program, students explore the interaction between modern computer science and related technologies that have evolved the mathematical and design principles of engineering into the development of modern computing system.

Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Engineering Technology
From the University of Toledo through LCCC's University Partnership
The program in Computer Science and Engineering Technology (CSET) includes hardware and software aspects of both computer design and computer applications.  Computer design emphasizes the structure of computers and requires expertise in computational applications, digital design, microcomputer systems and computer architectures.  Computer applications emphasizes the use of computer software in engineering technology and requires both low-level and high-level programming techniques, the use of mathematical algorithms, and a general knowledge of computer operating systems.  The CSET program provides students with an in-depth understanding of computer hardware and software at the machine and system level.

To enter this program, first complete the LCCC Associate of Applied Science in Engineering Technology (Computer Maintenance and Networking).  To earn the Bachelor of Science degree, you will complete an additional year of related studies at LCCC, and one year of studies at the University of Toledo program at the LCCC University Partnership.

Graphics and Animation

Associate of Arts
The Associate of Arts degree program is designed for students who intend to continue their education after LCCC.  You may earn an Associate of Arts degree with a concentration in any or all of the three areas below:

  • Computer Art
  • Fine Art
  • Graphic Design

The Associate of Arts degree does not have a specific major, but elective courses can be used as transfer credits toward a number of different majors at the bachelor's degree level at the LCCC University Partnership and other universities.

Computer Forensics, Recovery and Security

The Computer Maintenance and Networking (CMNW) program offers coverage in computer forensics, security and data recovery in several courses, and in particular, CMNW 222, Computer Forensics and Data Recovery.

IT Security is a component of many of the classes within the degree programs of Computer Information Systems. The security emphasis covers the spectrum from business policy development and planning through to specific technical knowledge with hands-on implementation skills for server and network equipment. A cornerstone class with a specific emphasis in IT security is provided through the CISCO Network Academy's Network Security curriculum. This particular course prepares the student for the CISCO Security Specialist Certification Exam and significant portions of the CISCO Security Professional certification.
