Program Overview
Occupational therapy practitioners help people of all ages gain skills needed to take part in meaningful daily activities.

This program is designed to prepare students to provide occupational therapy treatments and related tasks under the supervision of a Registered Occupational Therapist.

The Occupational Therapy Assistant program at EHOVE leads to an Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree through Lorain County Community College and ultimately, a career as an occupational therapy assistant.

A maximum of 25 students are accepted into the program each year. The OTA program is offered on a full time basis at EHOVE Adult Career Center.

This 24 month program includes course work in general education courses with classroom training and field experiences specific to the field of occupational therapy assisting. Students in this program complete a series of fieldwork experiences with a wide range of client ages and a variety of physical and mental health conditions. Level I fieldwork (practicum experiences—105 hours per semester) provides students with exposure and practice within clinical environments, schools and community settings. Level II fieldwork provides a full-time clinical experience of sixteen weeks under the supervision of an occupational therapy practitioner in a variety of practice areas following successful completion of academic coursework.

Occupational Therapy Assistants use everyday activities in the areas of self-care, education, work, play, leisure and social participation as the means of helping people of all ages create, promote, establish,restore, maintain and modify functional abilities.

Admission Requirements 

  • 18 years of age or older 
  • High school diploma or GED 
  • 2.5 GPA or higher 
  • Pre-entrance testing - evaluates ability to pursue Occupational Therapy Assistant education 
  • Application form and fee 
  • Personal interview 
  • Documented OT observation time 
  • Attend an information session

What to Expect

  • OT Theory
    The study of the OT principles, OT history, OT philosophy, psychosocial and developmental dysfunctions, medical
    terminology, and anatomy and physiology.
  • OT Practice
    Learning the appropriate techniques for treatments in their
    proper sequence taking into consideration the client’s age and physical and psychosocial condition.
  • OT Fieldwork
    Fieldwork will occur in traditional and/or emerging settings.
    Psychosocial factors influencing engagement in occupational
    therapy assisting must be understood and integrated for the
    development of client centered, meaningful, occupation-based outcomes.

Accreditation

The OTA program has been granted Developing Program status by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), located at 4720 Montgomery Lane, P.O. Box 31220, Bethesda, MD 20824-1220. ACOTE’s telephone number c/o AOTA is (301) 652-AOTA.Once full accreditation of the program has been obtained, its graduates will be eligible to sit for the national certification examination for the occupational therapy assistant administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). After successful completion of this exam, the individual will be a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA).

In addition, most states require licensure in order to practice; however , state licenses are usually based on the results of the NBCOT Certification Examination.

Note that a felony conviction may affect a graduate’s ability to sit for the NBCOT certification examination or attain state licensure.
