LCCC Wins Hard Fought Match Against Tri-C - 9/10/14
by Keith Reynolds
The Lorain County Community College Commodores Volleyball team won a hard fought match against the Cuyahoga Community College Challengers on Wednesday. The match was held in the Ewing Activity Center at LCCC.
The Commodores got off to a slow start in the first set allowing the Challengers to get a three point lead in the first three volleys, but quickly gained momentum and came out victorious with a score of 25-16. In the second set LCCC started out strong and battled hard to the last point, but sadly lost 23-25 due to Tri-C's intense pressure . The third set was marked by an increase in intensity from the Commodores which seemed to overwhelm the Challengers, netting a win for the Commodores 25-16. The Challengers tired in the fourth and final set, allowing the Commodores to exploit the Challengers' weaknesses and exert their own strengths to win 25-15.
Top players in this match were outside hitter Danya Corlews (Elyria High) with an extraordinary 17 kills, defensive specialist Paige Elias (Brookside) with 21 digs, middle hitter Brenna Villwock (Lutheran West) with 7 blocks (3 solo and 4 assist), and setter Kady Whitsel (Brookside) with 32 assists.
"I thought Tri-C played much harder than the first time we'd seen them, and I thought maybe we were a little lax and weren't playing as tough, or as hard as we could have played at the beginning of that match, and then it became a dog fight. When you're going one and one it's anybody's ballgame. I thought we picked up our intensity in the third set and started doing the good things that we can do." Coach Ted Whitsel summarized at the end of the match.
