Why do you teach with Service Learning?

“Service learning with the Girl Scouts is a win-win situation: students share information learned in class and young girls learn personal financial basics!”

Project Explanation:

Students completing a Service Learning project in Professor Malakar’s Personal Finance course may have the opportunity to take the knowledge they learned in the classroom and teach young Girl Scouts financial literacy. The Girl Scouts provided the basic program curriculum for the Cent$Ability and Penny Power projects and students were able to administer the program teach young girls age appropriate information about money, credit, mortgages, bank accounts, etc.

Success Story:

A Service Learning student writes about her experience with the Girl Scouts: “The project was an opportunity to share skills that I have developed in my own life and in my Personal Finance class with young women who may not have been exposed to these concepts through their school or academic life. Most of the girls I worked with were completely unfamiliar with the subject matter, and it seemed that it sparked an interest in several of them to start thinking ahead to take charge of their own future. They were presented with basic resources to further explore careers and educational opportunities that will help them to achieve their goals.”
