(Please note: Not every course/semester contains a service learning project)

Why do you teach with Service Learning?

“Service Learning gives students a chance to apply and extend their knowledge by working on real projects. The students' "own" the project; they are responsible for most every aspect. It benefits the students' learning and is valuable experience that can be put on their resumes. It also gives students an opportunity to make a difference in their communities.”

Project Explanation:

Students completing a Service Learning project in Professor Zellers’ course have the chance to take their technology skills learned in class and use them to benefit the community. Some projects included creating a website for the Samuel L. Felton Jr. Community Development Program Inc. or Friends from the Start. Others included developing marketing videos for organizations such as Family Promise of Lorain County.

Success Story:

One of the students who created the website for Friends from the Start reflected upon their experience, “I learned more about HTML design, the use of CSS, and how to help make a difference in many peoples' lives.  By creating a site, it has allowed me to improve my skills in HTML/CSS, as well as improving the lives of those affected by cancer.
