Angela DiBernardo is a motivated 18-year-old. She will graduate from Avon Lake High School in June and will earn an Associate of Arts degree from Lorain County Community College in May.

DiBernardo took advantage of Post-Secondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) offered both inside her high school and on the LCCC campus. The program allowed her to earn an associate’s degree for free, while also preparing her for the next step in her education: attending The Ohio State University to study architecture.

“LCCC has helped me complete all my general education requirements before I go on to my major specific courses at OSU,” DiBernardo said.

Juggling high school, college courses and a social life at the same time wasn’t an easy task, but DiBernardo learned to put her coursework first.  Her hard work earned her a scholarship at OSU that will cover her first year of tuition.

“I've had really great teachers and I am a very motivated person. I had to put in a lot of work to get this degree at the same time as finishing high school,” she said.

When she began with PSEO courses, her plan was to save money and time on her way to a four-year degree following high school graduation. Her PSEO plans shifted, however, once she realized her dream to work in architecture. The architecture program at The Ohio University is studio-based four-year program, meaning she will be required to devote a significant amount of time outside of class to working on projects in the studio.

“When I learned that I would be required to stay in school for the full four years to earn a bachelor’s degree in architecture, my purpose for PSEO changed,” she recalled. “From that point on, I was taking classes in the hopes of getting all my general education requirements out of the way so that I could have ample time to focus on my major-specific classes, and especially the studio.”

DiBernardo plans to continue in architecture and eventually earn a master’s degree.
