Michael Velez

EARLY COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL CLASS PRESIDENT EARNS DEGREE, BROTHER ALSO EARNS DEGREE

Being the Early College High Schools’ senior class president and a high school varsity baseball player are just some of Michael Velez’s achievements.

When you ask him what his most important accomplishment is, he says it is graduating from LCCC with an Associate of Arts degree. His brother, Anthony Velez, 22, is receiving his Associate of Arts degree this May, too.

Michael sought to gather the best life experiences and found them all at LCCC – from lasting friendships to influential professors. He asserts that LCCC “did not just meet my goals, it surpassed them by a big margin.” He acquired his high school diploma and got a head start to pursue his career goals much earlier than others his age.

Being a college and high school student simultaneously was a challenge for Michael, as trying to balance both lifestyles was difficult to understand and follow. "I was young when I started college and I learned that I had to take on more responsibilities and I matured in the process," he admits.

Carrying on a part-time job at an Avon Best Buy while studying for high school and college was another challenge Michael undertook as he decided to "support my struggling family and piling bills.”

He owes his success to his family, especially his brother Anthony, who is also an Early College High School alumni and who is now graduating with his third degree from LCCC.  Anthony’s guidance helped Michael transition into college.

Michael also credits Ben Toth, ECHS success coach, who helped him gain an insight into his own interests and inclination, advising and guiding him when he needed it the most.

Michael plans to take pre-physical therapy at Ohio University after graduating from LCCC.
