LCCC Great Grads
Donny Rowe
Moving towards an economy-proof career by degrees
Donny Rowe, 31, will receive an associate’s of arts and an associate’s of science degree on May 23. Rowe, who spent most of his adult life working in automotive manufacturing in Sandusky, decided it was time to make his career economy proof.
“LCCC has so many great classes with flexible times offered making it easy to take classes,” noted Rowe. “Even online classes were another great option that helped me.”
While his journey began more than two years ago – attending LCCC part time – Rowe had no doubt that commuting from Vermilion to Sandusky for work would be temporary. Unfortunately, working in the automotive manufacturing industry, the signs were clearly on the wall – it was time to make a career decision that would lead to long-term job security.
“There are more than two million nurses in this country and men make up at least one percent,” stated Rowe. The decision to step into the nursing field was not an easy one. “I received good academic advice and suggestions from an academic counselor and Women’s Link.”
Coming to the decision to be a nurse required deep thought for Rowe. “When you are facing the possibility of unemployment, you have to decide either to find a different job now or complete your education. I chose to complete my education at LCCC.”
His first step began with the State-Tested Nurse Aide program at the LCCC Learning Center in Lorain. Upon completion, Rowe began work on pre-requisite courses for The University of Akron Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. During this process, he not only earned an associate of science, but also an associate of arts.
“I am living proof that you're never too old to earn a degree and it is never too late to start working towards your dreams and future,” he said.
Rowe believes he took a leap of faith at LCCC and the University Partnership with his future in nursing and a chance to achieve the American dream right here in Lorain County.
