Justin Kelley

Justin KelleyNorth Ridgeville Man not Taking Anything for Granted in Today’s Economy

Justin Kelley is earning an associate of applied business degree in business management. But he doesn’t necessarily need a degree – he already has two associate’s degree and a bachelor’s degree in Accounting. Kelley knows, however, that the current economic environment almost requires that he continues with further education.

“From a practical standpoint I don’t really need an additional associate’s degree. But it can bolster my resume by letting an employer know that I do have a working knowledge in these areas of study.  And from a behavioral standpoint, I think it conveys a quality of character that I’m hard working and value education,” Kelley said.

Continued education is important in today’s changing economy, he believes. That’s why he has continued to earn additional degrees even though he is already employed.  Working as a staff accountant for an international services company in downtown Cleveland, Kelley, is certain his education from LCCC and the University of Akron through the University Partnership helped land him the job.

“When I earned my bachelor’s degree I went through a recruiting service to get some interviews set up. My first interview was for a staff accountant. I was told I beat out five other candidates for the job,” Kelley recalled. “I believe that my experiences in and out of the classroom with students and faculty had a tremendous impact upon my ability to land this career-building position.”

These experiences prepared him for the “ebb and flow of life, with its opportunities and disappointments,” the 30-year-old said.  “And I’ve met some wonderful people along the way that have pushed me to do my best.”

And when Kelley is done with this degree is that the end of the educational line for him? Don’t count on it. He plans to earn another associates degree in finance starting in fall, then work towards an MBA in accounting. Finally ‑ well probably not – he will seek to earn certification as a CPA.

“I’ve learned to stay the course and have come to the realization that learning is a life-long, transcendent endeavor,” Kelley said.
