ANGEL MAC Browser Instructions

For ANGEL to work properly with your Mac computer, you must:

  • Have an approved browser
  • Verify browser settings
  • Disable pop-up blockers
  • Disable Parent Controls in Firefox
Solution: Mac Parental Controls work by routing all internet requests through a proxy server. This proxy server will confuse many logins including ANGEL, Yahoo and others. If Parental Controls cannot be disabled, you then need to manually set the proxy server. Click Firefox > Preferences > Advanced > Network > Settings.  Set the HTTP proxy host to $127.01.01.1 on port 10010. This will solve the problem.

Disable Pop-Up Blockers

Pop-up blockers WILL stop certain items in ANGEL from not being displayed (taking tests, adding attachments to drop-boxes or email, using the HTML Editor to add images, etc.)

Pop-up blockers work in the background while you browse the Internet.  When they detect a pop-up window that may be an unwanted advertisement, they automatically close the window. This can prevent ANGEL from performing properly.

The list of software with pop-up blocking capability grows constantly, so it is impossible to give comprehensive instructions that will work for all programs all the time.  Here are some tips that may help.

Pop-up blocking functions are included in some anti-virus, Internet security, personal firewall, and browser programs. Disable the relevant setting in the program. Examples of programs that include pop-up blocking functions include:

  • Norton Internet Security
  • AOL 8.0 and later
  • Many current browsers

To disable pop-up blockers for ANGEL:

Launch your browser.  On the menu bar click View -> Toolbars.  Any browser toolbars (AOL, Google, MSN, etc.) should be listed there.  A check mark beside a toolbar name means that controls for the toolbar are visible in your browser.  If a toolbar is not visible, click beside the toolbar name to make it visible.

Below is a list of popular programs with pop-up blocking capability, along with tips for managing them from your toolbars.  If you clicked View->Toolbars and no toolbars were listed, click Tools on your browser menu bar.  If you see Pop-up blocker listed look for the sub-menu to turn it on or turn off.

Internet Explorer:
To disable this feature, click on the Tools menu on Internet Explorer.  Then click Internet Options.  Select the Privacy Tab.  Uncheck the checkbox next to Block pop-ups.  Click the Apply button.  Click the OK button.

Google Toolbar:
Click on the Google Icon and click "Options."
In the Accessories Section deselect "Pop-Up Blocker."

Yahoo Toolbar:
Click on the "Pop-Up" Icon
Deselect "Enable Pop-Up Blocker."  If this button does not appear in the Yahoo Toolbar, click the pencil icon.
From the Tools Menu in IE, you should also uncheck Yahoo Companion.

MSN Toolbar:
Place your mouse pointer over the Pop-Up Icon.  If the message says "Pop-Up windows are being blocked, click to allow all pop-ups" then you should click on it.

Safari Blocker:
(Safari is not compatible with ANGEL at this time)
Open the Safari Menu and choose "Preferences"
Open the Security Menu
Deselect "Block pop-up windows."
