CISS 135, Program Development Using Visual Basic

(16 Week Class – Begins August 18 - Ends December 14)

The student may complete all coursework online, with the exception of the Mid-Term and Final Examinations. Students who live within a 60-mile radius of the LCCC campus are required to come on-campus to take the Mid-Term and Final Examinations. Those students living outside this radius may opt to take the examinations in a proctored environment at their location. Please note that if you qualify for and wish to use a proctor for the exams, you are responsible for any costs involved in the proctored situation. Further note that the instructor has the final say as to whether a particular proctoring arrangement is acceptable.

The MINIMUM hardware and software requirements for this course are higher than for most other internet courses. They are:

A PC (NOT a Macintosh) with a 1 GHz Processor, 512 Mb of RAM, a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and at least 4GB of free hard disk space. A sound card and speakers (most computers have these).

Your computer MUST use the one of the following operating systems:

• Windows Vista (any version)
• Windows XP Professional (must have Service Pack 2 installed)
• Windows XP Home (must have Service Pack 2 installed)
• Windows 2000 (must have Service Pack 4 or later installed)
• Windows Server 2003

If you do not have one of these operating systems on your computer, Windows Vista can be ordered from the LCCC Bookstore or from another educational reseller (a list is available HERE).

The Visual Basic.NET 2008 software is required for the course and is included with the textbook OR is available from Microsoft (Visual Basic Express Download Link, Visual Web Developer Express Download Link). Please note that Visual Basic.NET 2008 WILL NOT RUN under Windows 95, 98 or ME.

ZIP Files: Projects are posted as zip (compressed) files for students to download from the course website. When students complete projects, they must zip up their completed project folder and files and upload the resulting zip file to the course website for grading. Students MUST be able to comfortably work with zip files - both in terms of being able to extract from an existing zip file and to create a zip file that includes the required folders and files. Windows Vista and XP come with the native capability to work with zip files. Students using other Windows operating systems will need to use WinZip, 7ZIP, or other zip software in order to work with zip files. WinZip and 7Zip are available as free downloads (WinZip Download Link, 7Zip Download Link).

Adobe Acrobat Reader software is also required (available free at The Acrobat Reader Download Site).

All student writing must be done in .doc or .rtf formats. Word processors that can create .doc and .rtf formatted files include Microsoft Word (Word 2000 or later), or Microsoft WordPad (WordPad is included free with Windows), and OpenOffice (available free at http://www.openoffice.org/).

Please be advised that because of the highly technical nature of the course material, this course tends to be more difficult for many students than the same course taken in the traditional classroom environment. If you have any reservations about your ability to learn technical concepts without the interaction offered in the traditional classroom setting, please consider registering for one of the non-internet sections of this course.
