Academic Transformation & Course Redesign

THE CENTER FOR TEACHING EXCELLENCE COMMUNITY has been charged to assist faculty to reexamine and redesign LCCC courses and ways they are delivered and assessed.  Using research CTE has taken the first steps on this new journey.  Once again, Ohio Learning Network has supported an initial effort of our Business Division and Distance Learning Team.

The focus is on improving academic performance and retention of students.  We believe utilizing technology, we can offer students multiple avenues to learning, systems of self-assessment and speedy feedback.  Efforts are underway to make these promises realities.  Many of these efforts will result in savings to LCCC, to students and, we believe tax payers.

Diverse faculty, staff and students form teams to research opportunities for and challenges to teaching and learning.  They scan the larger learning community for insights and best practices.  They share lessons learned and products developed within Lorain County Community College family and with others.

The CTE team, in partnership with administration and faculty offers opportunities for faculty development.  Such diverse topics as: dealing with disruptive students, improving students' communication across the curriculum, assessment taxonomies and methods, use of techology multiple approaches to delivery of concepts and key information, involving students in the education process, are addressed.

They're addressed in forums, symposiums, round tables, informal study group gatherings.  They're addressed by faculty sharing information, by addresses by noted scholars and practitioners, by group study and by presentations of our own.

The Center is supported - valued - by LCCC administration.  This support goes far beyond the resources made available to it, its core team and the Learning Community teams within it.  The support, too, is beyond the investment made in research and development within or sponsored by CTE.

Results of its effort are utilized in planning and evaluating the educational impact of the College.

As LCCC goes forward in its Vision 2015 planning process, it folds CTE research and potential into that process.

CTE plays a role in the orientation of new faculty and in the planning for and conduct of Faculty Development Days each fall and spring.

To pretend that teams strive and perform in a vacuum would be a grave disservice to the LCCC family. Other administrators, staff, faculty and students share time and talent with CTE and with its teams. These members of the LCCC family are the difference between a good effort and an absolutely great one.
