What is KLP?
A leadership program for socially talented and academically gifted students impacted by Hurricane Katrina. Students will be selected in February-March 2008, and commit to participating in the program through summer 2009. There will be a spring orientation in New Orleans for students and their families.
The summer program is five weeks, and begins in June. The program will consist of leadership training, academically enriching classes, team activities, social events, and the United Nation Leadership Tour of New York City. The major outcome for Katrina students will consist of designing team leadership projects to be implemented during the 2008-2009 school year.
What is the purpose of the Katrina Leadership Project?
The KLP’s mission is to help rebuild the Gulf Region and America by constructing a new approach to leadership opportunities for students impacted by Hurricane Katrina. This approach includes teaching leadership through direct action projects, global awareness, technical skill development, media exposure, and intergenerational teamwork.
KLP believes young people of all communities must be prepared for national leadership, and become future shapers of world impacting organizations such as the United Nations, U.S Congress, Supreme Court, and Major Corporations. KLP’s vision is best summarized in an essay by our seventeen year-old Honor Student-Leader, Ms. Ayanna Cash-Clements: “Good leaders are made, not born.”
