Nordson and Lorain County Community College’s 2008 annual Lego Olympiad is set for April 11th.  LCCC’s student chapter of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers will host the event in the Ewing Activities Center.  “This is a home-grown activity,” said Mike Substelny, faculty member at LCCC and the event emcee.

Over 500 kids have already registered for the Lego Olympiad.  “It has grown significantly over the years,” said Substelny.  The Olympiad used to be held in the significantly smaller College Center Mall.

Anyone in kindergarten through seniors in high school are eligible to bring their blocks and build.  “The idea,” said Substelny, “is to give them a chance to be engineers for a day.  We get kids who want to design and build.  They don’t just show up and play.  We see excellent projects.”

Interested youth engineers must pre-register for the event.  The cost is $4.   No registrations will be accepted the day of the event.  The Olympiad will start at 7:30 am and finish at 1:45 pm.

The scene is a true spectacle.  “We see their brains at work,” said Substelny, “and we hope their participation helps inspire them to become engineers one day!”
