Why do you teach with Service Learning?

“Service Learning not only gives our Early College students a glimpse into the “reality” of community need, but also provides a hands-on learning experience for students that helps them better connect learning with course objectives as well as experience the interpersonal nature of the working world.”

Project Explanation:

Students who are in Brenda Owens’ SDEV courses will receive opportunities to participate in service learning projects that connect to course outcomes. For example, in SDEV 101 the Early College freshmen students have learned to be “On Course” by applying concepts from Skip Downing’s 8 Principals of Successful Students through Service Learning projects such as the MLK Day of Service, volunteering with Second Harvest Food Bank’s Backpack Program while SDEV 103 “Career Fitness” students assisted in Dr. Beil’s Campus Garden projects. Through these Service Learning projects, students learned about their personal values, time management, effective interpersonal communication, career exploration and reflection journaling.

Success Story:

“I never realized how many people were going hungry in Lorain County – especially kids! Making the weekend food bags for Second Harvest helped me learn more about what a social problem hunger is. Making the food bags also made me feel good, like there was something I could do to help.” -Reflection from an ECHS student, class of 2014; MLK Day of Service 2010
