Why do you teach with Service Learning?
"I teach with service learning because it provides the soon to be Registered Nurses with the true meaning of the provisions of the American Nursing Association Code of Ethics which guides the practice of the Registered Nurse. The students are demonstrating autonomy in selecting a service learning project with the LCCC community partners to do an assessment of the community needs, prioritize the needs of the community agency, plan strategies to address the needs and evaluate how the community agency needs are met and how the project they implemented demonstrates at least 4 provisions of the ANA Code of Ethics. The service learning projects allow the students to use the essential knowledge, skills and abilities required of a professional Registered Nurse and to make a difference in the members of the community(ies)."
Professor Wilford plans to expand the use of Service Learning in the NURS 126 Maternal Newborn Course and to the ACCESS LPN to RN course in NURS 136 Maternal Newborn Nursing.
Students completing a Service Learning project in Professor Wilford’s course will have a chance to work directly with a local community organization (such as the Lorain County Free Clinic, Blessing House, Lorain County Urban League, etc.) and implement a project based on an assessed health related community need through civic engagement applying the ANA Code of Ethics.
One of Wilford’s students served with Community Health Partner’s Youth Program on Nutrition and Exercise engaging 59 children between the ages of 7-18 years of age in healthy living education.
"I learned that planting small seeds of information is useful, it will grow with the children and blossom into healthy lives". – Service Learning Student
