Why do you teach with Service Learning?

“For me, service learning is equivalent to practical work. Students learn a lot of theories in the classroom, and they need to put these theories into practice; thus, they need hands-on experiences. Service learning provides that hands-on experience. My service learning project introduces students to a very important organization in our community – Big Brothers/Big Sisters. In addition, through service learning, students learn volunteerism which is very crucial in our modern world.”

Project Explanation:

Students engaged in Service Learning projects through Professor Obosu-Mensah’s courses are usually connected with the organization Big Brothers Big Sisters. After learning about the relevance of a family unit in class, students get to participate in a “Big for a Day” event mentoring children and observe differences in family structures and the effects on at-risk youth.

Service learning in this course is not limited to Big Brothers Big Sisters and Professor Obosu-Mensah welcomes other community organizations that need the services of college students to contact him.

Success Story:

A Service Learning student participated in building model cars with 10 kids from Big Brothers Big Sisters to race at Midway Mall. The student reflected on the experience: “This project opened my eyes to children who need mentors and positive influences in their lives. I was compassionate towards them and tried to help out the best way I could…even though I have never built a model car before! This project made me realize the impact a couple hours can make in a person’s life and has made me think about wanting to volunteer even more with their program.”
