Surgical Technologists, sometimes called operating room technicians, are allied health professionals who work with nurses and surgeons in direct care of patients in the operating room.

Most surgical technologists perform as the sterile scrub team member, whose three phase duties include:

  • Setting up an operating room with furniture, equipment and sterile supplies (preoperative phase)
  • Scrubbing the intraoperative phase which includes maintaining sterility and passing the surgeon all sterile instruments, suture, supplies, solutions and medications (intraoperative phase)
  • Assisting with suturing and providing dressings (postoperative phase)

Surgical technologists learn all of the surgical specialties: general, gynecology, urology, ear, nose, throat, orthopedic, cardiac, vascular, thoracic, plastic and reconstructive, obstetrics, ophthalmic, oral, maxillofacial and neurosurgery.

Learning is achieved through classroom, college laboratory and hospital clinical experiences.
