From reading to children to organizing a local food pantry, volunteers will canvass Lorain County on Friday, January 14 in honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Lorain County Community College students, staff and faculty, as well as community members, are invited to participate in a variety of community service projects across Lorain County as part of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. One service project will take place on Monday, January 17.

Volunteers may choose one of six service projects with community organizations, including: the Neighborhood House Association, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Save Our Children, Second Harvest Food Bank, Habitat for Humanity, and the Samuel L. Felton Jr. Community Development Program Inc.

Projects include:
• 12:45-3:30 p.m., Monday, January 17 – Serving as a big brother or big sister for the day at Big Brothers Big Sisters, 1917 North Ridge Road, Lorain.

• 9-11 a.m., Friday, January 14 – Reading children books about Martin Luther King Jr. to toddlers and preschoolers at the Neighborhood House Association’s Children’s Centers. Volunteers can choose the Elyria location at 107 Oberlin Road, Elyria, or the Lorain location at 3835 Clifton Ave., Lorain.

• 9-11:30 a.m. or 2-4:30 p.m., Friday, January 14 – Help Habitat for Humanity’s Restore by stocking items and doing touch-up painting around the store, located at 214 E. 34th St., Lorain.

• 3:45-5:45 p.m., Friday, January 14 -- Bring fun and knowledge to the children in the afterschool program at Save Our Children, 1621 Middle Ave., Elyria.

• 9-11:30 a.m. or 2-4:30 p.m., Friday, January 14 -- Join Second Harvest Food Bank, 7445 Deer Trail Lane, Lorain, in the fight against hunger. Assist in the warehouse, where food is prepared to be sent out to food pantries around the county.

• 9-11:30 a.m., Friday, January 14 – Help paint motivational quotes on the wall of the Samuel L. Felton Jr. Community Development Program Center, 112 E. 19th St., Lorain, for all to view.

Volunteers must register at by Tuesday, January 11. Volunteers receive a T-shirt and may attend a luncheon celebration from 12:30-1:30 p.m., Friday, January 14, in LCCC’s College Center. The MLK Day of Service is sponsored by LCCC’s serving learning.
