Mission: The Mission of the Lorain County Urban League is to empower African Americans and all disadvantaged persons in our community to participate equally in the educational, economic and social mainstream.
Agency Background and History:
The Lorain County Urban League (LCUL) was established in 1978 as an affiliate of the National Urban League, which was established in 1910. LCUL is a non-profit social service agency located in Elyria, Ohio. The agency has four operational departments that provide services, which focus on the development of individuals, strengthening families and empowering the community; they are:
Education Goal: Ensuring that our children are well-educated and equipped for economic self-reliance in the 21st Century. LCUL Educational services span the academic continuum from cradle through college, including the Read and Rise Family Literacy Program, which is designed to promote the love of reading and to support young children to become independent readers by the time they reach the fourth grade; mentoring and after-school tutoring; career exploration and college tours for high school students. A niche service that LCUL provides is the Urban Youth Adventure Challenge, an anger and violence prevention model that works with local schools to address the needs of highly at-risk youth.
Workforce Development Goal: Helping adults attain economic self-sufficiency through good jobs, homeownership and entrepreneurship. LCUL has established employment referral relationships with several companies in the region. Through these arrangements we are able to pre-qualify some clients who match the needs of the employers before we make referrals. We offer help with resume, mock interviews, job search, and job placement.
Housing Goal: Ensuring that individuals and families in our community have access to fair and affordable housing. LCUL is Lorain County’s Fair Housing Enforcement Agency; it monitors and documents housing discrimination cases throughout Lorain County. Housing services include: 1) Foreclosure counseling, 2) Financial literacy workshops, and 3) First-time homebuyer counseling.
Health Services Goal: Ensuring that the population we serve has equal access to healthcare and medical services. LCUL offers workshops on topics such as smoking, high blood pressure, diabetes, and cancers; health fairs that provide free on-the-spot screening for certain diseases; healthy lifestyles instruction on diet and exercise. LCUL currently has two diabetes prevention projects: Save Our Sons works with African American men and Save Our Families, which serves African American and Hispanic families.
