Guidelines for Preparing WBL Learning Agreement

Your Learning Agreement objectives should consist of three components:

  1. What do you want to accomplish through this work experience? [Your goals.]
  2. What steps are you planning to take to accomplish this? [Your plan or strategy to meet your goals.]
  3. How will the achievement be evaluated? [How can you show that you have met your goals?]

In order to gain the greatest benefit from your work-based learning experience, it will be helpful to consider the following questions and points carefully as you develop your learning objectives:

  • Focus on linking your academic learning with workplace activities. 
  • How will you use this experience to grow in your personal and professional development?
  • What can you do to improve your workplace skills: reading, writing, listening, and communicating clearly?
  • How can you grow in the ability to access information on issues related to your major?
  • How do you plan to relate specific classroom theory to workplace practices?
  • How do you develop an understanding of your particular workplace environment and develop skills for your successful participation in it?
  • What can you do to function effectively both on your own and as a collaborative team member?
  • Focus on knowledge you would like to acquire relevant to:
    • Academic major (theories and new practices)
    • Specific business/technical operational functions
    • Career development.
  • Focus on skills you would like to develop, such as:
    • Analytical skills - relevant to your academic major
    • Operational skills - relevant to the particular technical function in the work assignment
    • Interpersonal skills - relevant to interaction necessary for successful job performance.
    • Demonstrate values and behavior that are relevant to:
      • Your academic program/major
      • Your long-term academic goals
      • Your personal development goals
      • Career information
      • Professional ethics
      • Market trends, etc.
      • Development of a network of helpful professional contacts.
        • Additionally,

          • What skills do you already possess that you will be able to test in real situations?
          • What skills do you need to develop that would help you achieve your career goals?

          Note:  It would be helpful to prepare a rough draft of your goals and objectives and show it to your faculty advisor before you meet with your job supervisor.
