Requesting Permission

Requesting Permission to Use or Copy Material

It is prudent to request permission if a question exists as to whether a particular act of copying may be in violation of the U.S. Copyright law.

Requesting Permission Process:

1.  Requests for permission to utilize materials or copy materials are directed to the copyright holder.
2.  Your request should be submitted promptly to ensure that the copyright holder has sufficient time to respond to your request.
3.  Requests should be specific in terms of identifying the material, the purpose, the quantity, and if a change in format is needed.
4.  Include the following information:

-Name and address of the educational institution
-Date of the request
-Name and address of the copyright holder (e.g. publisher)
-Title, edition, or volume number of the book or article

Note:  If the copyright holder is not identified, an attempt to identify the copyright holder should be made by conducting a copyright search.  The U. S. Copyright Office provides the databases to search for copyright registrations and documents.

To locate a publisher's address please phone the LCCC Library Reference desk at Ext. 4106, email Ask A Librarian, or consult LMP: Literary Market Place 2007 located in the Reference Collection at R070.5 L776 v. 1 2007.
