Thursday, April 23– Sunday, May 3, 2009

A special gallery exhibition that featured “I’ll Sing in Silence,” a portfolio of serigraph prints by Jose R. Alicea, inspired by the poetry and prose of Pablo Neruda. Also featured were Prayer sticks and Sculpture by Mario Kujawski, including an outdoor environmental sculpture created by the artist and LCCC art students. Artist Mario Kujawski was on campus during the month of April completing an arts residency with LCCC art students. Together, they created an outdoor environmental sculpture reflecting the exhibition theme of “Hopes and Dreams” titled “Prayer Catcher.” The goals of the residency and project were to provide art students with an opportunity to participate in the creation of a major work of art with a professional artist and also to create a participatory work of art and place of reflection for everyone on campus. The campus community was also invited to participate in the creation of the art and the use of the space, all connecting to the theme of expressing our individual and collective hopes and dreams. “Prayer Catcher” is located in the garden area on the southwest corner of the LCCC Courtyard. The environmental sculpture has been created under the leadership of Nancy Halbrooks and other interested LCCC art faculty. Also featured in the gallery exhibit was art, poetry, and an oral history collection by LCCC students, as well as illustrations and poetry by students from Longfellow Middle School in Lorain that have been included in a children’s book authored by Dr. Raquel Ortiz Rodriguez. Bruce Weigl and Kim Greenfield’s students wrote poetry based on the imagery of Jose Alicea, and art students from Nancy Halbrook’s Drawing class and Elwyn Mehlman’s Design class created graphic designs and illustrations based on some of the poems by these students, while others have worked on the sculptural installation. This collaboration and sculpture was sponsored by the Stocker Arts Center and the Lorain County Sacred Landmarks Initiative, in collaboration with the LCCC Arts and Humanities Department, Sacred Heart Chapel, the Lorain City Schools, and the Hispanic Leadership Conference. Funding provided by the Community Foundation of Lorain County, the Hispanic Fund, and the Lorain County Sacred Landmarks Initiative.
