Advising and Counseling

Should I See an Advisor or Counselor?

  • Academic Advisors specialize in orienting students to college programs and procedures. They assist students with registration and answer general questions about academic programs and requirements. They refer students to the designated counselor for in-depth guidance on specific program requirements. Advisors may also discuss COMPASS, ASSET or ACT/SAT results with students to help them schedule the appropriate English or mathematics classes.

  • Counselors are available by appointment and specially trained to assist students with educational and life planning, career development and personal issues. Counselors help students to identify barriers and develop solutions that enable them to persist and achieve their academic goals. To this end, counselors provide in-depth guidance on course selection for degree completion. In addition, assessment may be provided to help students gain a better understanding of their needs, values, interests and abilities. Counselors may also interpret results of COMPASS, ASSET and ACT/SAT to facilitate appropriate course placement in mathematics and English.
