LCCC Nordson 19th Annual Lego Olympiad

LCCC Nordson 19th Annual Lego Olympiad

2009 will mark the 19th Lorain County Community College/Nordson Lego Olympiad.

It is not a stretch to say the event has inspired future engineers over the years. "Some of the kids that were building wonderful projects when they were small," said LCCC Engineering Instructor Mike Substelny, "I now see as students in my engineering classes."

On Friday, May 8th, the LCCC student Chapter of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers hosts students from kindergarten to seniors in high school for a one day competition. "It is a unique opportunity," said Substelny, "for young students to actually practice being engineers. They get to design and build an exciting creation of their own and they get to have real engineers in the field judge their final product."

This year’s Lego Olympiad will be held in the Spitzer Conference Center on the LCCC campus. This is a change from the Ewing Activities Center as the site of the past events.

The event will start with registration at 7:30 am and at 1:45 pm following the awards ceremony.

One of the most exciting moments is the start. Imagine over 500 students spread out with piles and piles of building blocks surrounding them all. "The kids do a ten second countdown," said Substelny. When the countdown hits zero it is time to build.

There are three divisions of competition in the Lego Olympiad. They are the computer controlled division, the theme division and the open division.
