Medical Mission Trip - Edward

MEDICAL MISSION TRIP

How would you like to take a course that takes you to the edge of hunger, the point of human need and to a place where health care often goes unserved.

Nine Lorain County Community College Allied Health and Nursing students traveled to such a place in February. Their stay was two weeks.

In Dajabon, Republica Dominicana, the LCCC students joined a medical mission group and helped provide surgical care to the people of this town along the Haitian border.

Pat Sedlak, Associate Professor and Director of Surgical Technology at Lorain County Community College has been leading these trips for 12 years. The trip is actually a college course. Sedlak developed the course. It is named Health Care in Developing Nations and is a clinical rotation required for the course.

Seven hundred patients were seen. Two hundred surgeries were performed, including five deliveries of babies, over 1,000 prescriptions were given and 70 lab tests were carried out. All nine of the LCCC students and Sedlak participated in the process.

The attached video is one of a series of stories that will appear profiling the Medical Mission trip our students embarked. This story features Allied Health student Adam Mentkowski and his work outside the surgical walls of the hospital.
