Prior Learning Assessment Information Session

Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) Information Session

Adult Learners, Veterans, current students and returning students

Welcome! The Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) information session will present an overview of the methods that can be used to help you earn college credit for what you have LEARNED through your work and life experiences.

Prior Learning is used to describe learning acquired by a person outside of the traditional classroom environment. Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) is the process of evaluating life experience for college credit. Some students come to college having experience in a field or knowledge from independent study. Work, community service and service in the military are typical areas where knowledge gained may be assessed for college credit. PLA allows students to accelerate their degree and avoid the repetition of coursework for material they have already mastered. PLA credits can be used for the following:

  • To obtain advanced standing at the institution
  • To waive course pre-requisites
  • To meet general education requirements
  • To meet program/major requirements.
