Black River String Quartet Recital

On Wenlock Edge, Cycle of Six Songs For Tenor, Piano, and String Quartet
From “A Shropshire Lad,” by A. E. Housman
Ralph Vaughn Williams
Kyle Kelvington, Guest Tenor
Yuka Nakayama-Lewichi, Guest Pianist

String Quartet in F Major, M. 35
Maurice Ravel

Tenor, Kyle Kelvington and pianist Yuka Nakayama-Lewichi will be featured guest with the Black River String Quartet 3:00pm on Sunday, April 3, 2016 in the Stocker Arts Center’s Cirigliano Studio Theatre.  Mr. Kelvington, who has performed extensively in Northeast Ohio, will sing Ralph Vaughn Williams’ On Wenlock Edge, Cycle of Six Songs. In 1909, Ralph Vaughn Williams chose six poems form A. E. Housman’s Shropshire Lad and composed this work.  The work calls for a tenor, a string quartet, and a piano, which will be performed by Yuka Nakayama-Lewichi.

The program will also include Maurice Ravel’s masterful String Quartet in F Major.  Composed in 1903, it stands as one of monuments of the Impressionistic Movement.  Actually, both works have Impressionism as a common thread, one decidedly English, the other decidedly French.

The Black River String Quartet includes violinists Andréa Belding and Janice Krueger, violist Jamie Thornburg, and cellist John Kukula.  Each of them are active performers, for example Andréa Belding also performs in the indie rock band, Seafair.

Black River String Quartet Recital

String Quartet Op. 18, No. 3
Dvořák’s String Quartet in F major Op. 96, No. 12 “The American”
Cirigliano Studio Theatre

Dvořák’s American Quartet is one of the best known and loved of all the quartet literature. The quartet is a perfect blend of Dvořák’s signature Czech folk style and American music. He visited America in the years 1892 – 1895 and during his stay was exposed to the melting pot of styles. The Quartet by Dag Wirén (1905 – 1986) is by contrast little known and difficult to find, but it has the same charm and appeal of the Dvořák.
