LCCC students with disabilities have a right to:

  • Accessible courses, programs, services, jobs and activities at LCCC.
  • Non-discrimination: Lorain County Community College does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sexual orientation gender identity and/or expression, disability, religion or veteran/military status in its programs or activities.
  • Appropriate confidentiality of disability-related information. Students with disabilities do not have to disclose their specific disability information to their instructor. Students may choose only to talk over the accommodations for which they are eligible. The student will need to disclose to the Accessibility Services Office their specific disability information/verification in order to receive accommodations.
  • Reasonable accommodations and/or aids determined on an individual basis through appropriate third-party documentation and/or a functional impact assessment.
  • Information in alternate formats as required.
  • File a complaint, internally or externally of any alleged violation of the ADA or section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Internally, this process follows the grievance procedure as outlined on the College’s website. LCCC students with disabilities seeking accommodations through LCCC’s Accessibility Services Office have a responsibility to:

  • Schedule an appointment to meet with a Learning Specialist and self-identify as a student with a disability if they wish to seek accommodations for a disability-related concern.
  • Provide the Accessibility Services Office with appropriate documentation/evidence of a disability.
  • Meet the College’s essential and institutional standards, with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Complete the same or equal course requirements, with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Provide the instructor with his/her Accommodation Letter and meet to discuss this in a private manner.
  • Follow the notification guidelines for testing and other time-sensitive requests.
  • Communicate with his/her instructors and/or the Accessibility Services Office regarding their accommodations or if there are any problems with receiving accommodations per the Accommodation List.
  • Notify the Accessibility Services Office to request a change in accommodations, providing the necessary supporting documents/evidence and scheduling a meeting to discuss this.
  • Comply with the College’s Code of Conduct policy (for all students, faculty and staff).


The Accessibility Services Office has a right to:

  • Request documentation from the student that is completed by an appropriate professional to verify the need for accommodations.
  • Discuss the student’s need for reasonable accommodations with the professional source of his/her documentation (with a signed consent).
  • Select among equally effective and appropriate accommodations and/or auxiliary aids in consultation with students with disabilities.
  • Deny a request for accommodations and/or auxiliary aids if the documentation does not support a specific disability or fails to verify the need for the requested accommodations.
  • Refuse to provide an accommodation or auxiliary aid that is deemed inappropriate or unreasonable including any that constitutes a substantial change or alteration to an essential element of a course.
  • Require advance notification to proctor exams or other scheduled services such as interpreting, scribing, etc.


Faculty/Staff have a right to:

  • Request that a student requiring accommodations provide them with a letter outlining their accommodations (Accommodation List).
  • Expect that students will follow the notification guidelines for receiving their accommodations (e.g. advance notification of testing requests, materials in an alternate format, etc.)
  • Expect that students with or without disabilities follow the Campus Code of Conduct.
  • Contact the Accessibility Services Office to discuss accommodations, if needed. Students often sign a Consent Form that allows more open communication between the instructor and the AS Office.


The Accessibility Services Office along with Faculty and Staff have a responsibility to:

  • Ensure that reasonable accommodations are arranged for, provided for, and allowed in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act in a timely and reasonable manner.
  • Treat all students with fundamental fairness.
  • Follow confidentiality guidelines.
  • Include a syllabus statement that provides students with disabilities contact information for arranging a time to meet or information on registering with the Accessibility Services Office.
  • Provide information/materials and classroom adaptations in alternate formats as required.
  • Discuss any issues that arise with the student and/or Accessibility Services Office in a timely manner (per confidentiality guidelines).
  • Inform students with disabilities of their right to file a complaint internally through the grievance process and/or through an external agency (Office for Civil Rights)
  • Maintain appropriate records and communications concerning students with disabilities (The Accessibility Services Office maintains).
