Basketball Lands Four on OCCAC & NJCAA District Teams
March 11, 2020 – – The Ohio Community College Athletic Conference, a mix of Division II and Division III Colleges, announced their 2019-2020 OCCAC All-Conference selections along with the NJCAA All-District teams for Men’s and Women’s Basketball. LCCC, a Division III school, had four student-athletes honored this season.
Leading the pack was freshman forward, Vanecia Billings (Lorain/Clearview) who garnered All-Freshman Team, OCCAC All-Conference Second Team, and All-District Division III Team honors after an incredible rookie campaign where she earned two OCCAC Player of the Week nods. Billings recorded 17 double-doubles in 26 contests this season and had double-figure rebounds in 21 of those games. Her 326 rebounds set a new season mark at LCCC and ranked her sixth nationally amongst NJCAA Division III players. She also ranked 17th nationally with a 12.5 rebound/game average and was 29th in the country with 33 blocked shots.
Sophomore forward Haley Sprouse (LaGrange/Keystone) was selected to the NJCAA All-District Division III Team after a strong first season with the Commodores, including an outstanding post-season performance against Owens CC in the Regional Semi-Finals. Spouse scored 15 points, grabbed seven rebounds, handed out three assists, and snagged two steals in LCCC’s 57-56 last-second loss to The Express. She led LCCC for the season with 1.9 steals/game, finished second in assists/game, and was third for points and rebounds.
A sophomore forward on the Men’s team, Derek Yahnke (Hilliard/Hilliard Bradley) wrapped up his LCCC basketball career by earning OCCAC All-Conference Honorable Mention and NJCAA District Division III Team honors. Yahnke led the team this season in points with a 13.8/game average, pulled in 5.3 rebounds/game, and averaged 1.4 blocked shots a game. He set career bests with 36 points and 22 caroms against Hocking.
Jaylen Jenkins (Willoughby/Willoughby South), a freshman guard earned an OCCAC All-Conference Honorable Mention nod after a stellar season for the Commodores. Jenkins earned OCCAC Player of the Week honors during the year after logging a double-double of 25 points and 10 assists, then scoring 19 points and dishing out six assists against DII Lakeland CC. He led LCCC with a 4.4 assist/game average and with 1.8 steals/game, as well as finishing second with a 13.2 point/game average.
