Basketball Players Sweep Division III OCCAC Weekly Honors

November 19, 2019 – -The Lorain County Community College Basketball teams capped off a great week of play by sweeping the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) Player of the Week Honors for both men and women. Kevin Miller, Jr. (Elyria) and Vanecia Billings (Lorain/Clearview) earned the honors after making significant contributions to their teams this week.

A Sophomore Guard, Miller led the LCCC Men’s team to a 2-1 record, including a close 77-88 loss to nationally ranked Rock Valley College. According to Lorain Head Coach, Marty Eggleston, “KJ was a difference maker in the past three games. His stats are great; however much of what he did to help the team was in areas not reflected by the stat book.” Miller scored 18 points in the wins and averaged 16.3 points per game, 3.7 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1.6 steals. Over the three games, Miller shot an amazing 19 of 23 at the charity stripe for an 83% average and was 15 of 25 from the floor for a 60% field goal percentage.

Freshman Forward Billings earns her second OCCAC Player of the Week award this season, with the first one coming as a member of the Commodore volleyball team. Billings had a back-to-back double-doubles, with the first one coming against the sixth-ranked team in the nation, Rock Valley College. She averaged 16 points and 16.5 rebounds, as well as two blocked shots. Her defense helped LCCC hold Harper College to just 20 points and set a new school record for lowest opponent point total in a game.

LCCC Head Coach, Vince Granito, commented, “Vanecia really enhanced her game over the weekend at both the offensive and defensive ends of the floor. She is becoming that inside presence that our program has lacked over the last few years. V and the entire team are coming together nicely.”

Both LCCC squads are now 2-3 on the season. Lorain hosts Division II Lakeland Community College on Wednesday, November 20, 2019. Tipoff for women is 5:30 pm and the men have a 7:30 pm start.
