Billings, Women’s Basketball Dominate in 70-20 Victory

November 17, 2019 – – Vanecia Billings (Lorain/Clearview) had back to back double-doubles this weekend for the Lorain County Community College Women’s Basketball Team as they traveled to Chicago for games against Rock Valley College and Harper College. The Commodores fell to Rock Valley 92-74 on Saturday then came back strong today against Harper College with a dominating 70-20 win.  

LCCC took an early 19-12 first-quarter lead over the NJCAA’s sixth-ranked Division III team, Rock Valley, but the Golden Eagles found their rhythm from the 3-point line and outscored the Commodores 34-13 in the second. Lorain played evenly with Rock Valley in the second half and put up 30 points in the final quarter.  

Billings pulled in 16 caroms and scored 15 points to lead LCCC. She also had an assist and block. Brandyce Smith (Lorain/Clearview) led the Commodores in scoring with 20 points, while Bri Gallagher (Medina/ Cloverleaf) and Haley Sprouse (LaGrange/Keystone) added 12 apiece.

Lorain set a new record for fewest points allowed from an opponent when they held Harper College to just 20 points in their dominating 70-20 win. (The previous low was 21 vs Pitt-Titusville in 2014.) After the third quarter, the Commodores had only given up eight points to the Hawks and held them to a 9.5 shooting percentage for the game.

Smith led in scoring again with 21 and Billings recorded her second double-double with 17 points and 17 rebounds. Billings also had three blocked shots. Sprouse and Gallagher finished with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Ashely Elliott (LaGrange/Keystone) led LC with four steals and Smith dished off three assists.

LCCC is now 2-3 on the season and will host Division II Lakeland Community College on Wednesday, November 20, 2019. Tipoff is at 5:30 pm in the Ewing Activity Center.
