Commodore Baseball Advances in Region XII Tourney with Victory
May 7, 2019 – – Lorain County Community College advanced to the next round of action in the Division III Region XII Baseball Tournament with a huge win in the second round over Schoolcraft College by a score of 7-2. The victory is the first ever Regional Tournament win for LCCC and it came against a team they had never beaten, including two losses this season. It was a must win game, as the Commodores lost their first-round game 3-1 against the region’s top seed, Delta College, in the double-elimination tournament.
Domenic Fleming (Columbia Station/Midview) was spectacular in his complete game win, notching 11 strikeouts and he gave up no earned runs. He walked 5 and allowed 5 hits but Lorain stepped up defensively, with 1 out and bases loaded in the bottom of the 5th to get Fleming out of a jam and keep the Ocelots from scoring. In both the 5th and 6th innings, LCCC gunned down runners at home plate to protect their lead.
Eli Loveland (Toledo/Whitmer) had 2 RBI’s, a sac fly, and stolen base, while Derek Dulemba (Elyria/Midview) and Noah Henderson (Toledo/Whitmer) each had an RBI in the win. Jesse Barrios (Wooster/Home School) went 3 for 4, scored 2 runs and had a stolen base.
Jared Naida (Cleveland/Lakewood) had another outstanding outing for the Commodores in first round play…pitching a complete game but Jake Wright could do no wrong for the Delta Pioneers. Naida came into the game against the region’s top team leading the Nation with a 0.58 ERA but Delta was able to score off a tight fair ball call down the 3rd baseline in the top of the 8th to break the 1-1 tie and go up 3-2. Wright recorded 9 strikeouts, walked 1 and gave up just 1 hit in 8 innings pitched.
LCCC threatened in the bottom of the 9th, as Barrios hit a clutch two out single and Damion Coleman (Niles/Niles McKinley) worked a full count, fouling off multiple pitches to stay alive before eventually striking out. Coleman drove in the only run for Lorain by bringing home Barrios in the 4th inning with a triple, narrowly missing a home run.
Tournament play continues at Sports Force Park in Sandusky on Wednesday, May 8, 2019, with Delta taking on Owens in the winner’s bracket at 11am. LCCC will play at 2:30 p.m. against the game one loser for a chance to move on to the Championship game on Thursday at 11 a.m.
