January 12, 2022 – The Lorain County Community College men’s basketball team suffered a crushing last second defeat at home Wednesday evening to the Terra State Community College Titans, 79-77. A crucial turnover by the Commodores with 12 seconds left set the stage for the Titans to have the last possession and they took advantage.
With the game tied at 77, Terra State guard Jordan Whitford (Detroit, Mich.) cut through the Commodore defense and scored the go ahead basket for the Titans with .2 seconds remaining. Whitford finished with 18 points behind eight assists and four rebounds.
Once again pacing the offensive effort for LCCC was Rod Harris (Akron, Ohio/Garfield HS) with 24 points and four rebounds. Foul trouble kept Harris, last week’s Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) Player of the Week, off the floor for most of the first half, limiting one of Region 12’s top scorers to only four points scored in the opening 20 minutes. The freshman responded with 20 points on 7-for-12 shooting in the second half including a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe.
Bennett Sulen (Avon, Ohio/St. Edward HS) got the Commodore offense going early on by sinking two long distance triples in the opening minutes on his way to 16 points and five rebounds. Lem Payne (Philadelphia, Pa./Mt. Pleasant HS) chipped in 12 points with four rebounds and three steals. Quante May (Lorain, Ohio/Horizon Science Academy) had a team-high eight rebounds.
With the loss, LCCC falls to 7-6 on the season and 1-3 in conference play. They will play host to the Clark State Community College Eagles on Saturday, January 15, at 3 p.m.
