Five LCCC Athletes Garner OCCAC Basketball & All-District Honors

March 9, 2019 – – Lorain County Community College had five hoopsters honored for their efforts this season, as they were named to the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference Basketball Team. Three of the players were also named to the All-District Team for the 2018-2019 season.

Leading the way was Defensive Player of the Year Jovon Jones. Jones a 6-7 Center recorded 52 blocks on the season, ranking him 15th in the Nation for Division III players. He pulled in 233 rebounds (33rd nationally) for an 8.3 RPG average and scored 378 points on the season (13.5 PPG) with a 62.2% field goal percent. Jones was also named to the Division III District Team and received OCCAC Honorable Mention.

Justin Newman was the only Division III player to land First-Team OCCAC accolades in Men’s Basketball. His 591 points on the season (19.7 PPG) ranked him 18th in the Nation for points in a season amongst Division III players. He also pulled in 192 rebounds, dished out 76 assists, and had 73 steals (2nd in OCCAC) on the year. Newman was named to the Division III All-District Team, as well.

Sharp-shooter Thomas Hronis was an OCCAC Honorable Mention Selection after leading the OCCAC in 3-point field goal percentage with 43.5% on a 93-214 season effort. Nationally he ranked 27th in Division III. Hronis set the school record for 3-pointers made in a game, nailing 9 from long-range against Owens Community College. His 413 points for the season, ranked him 13th in the OCCAC and gave him a 14.8 PPG average.

Marquita Thompson helped lead the LCCC Women’s team to their best record in school history since joining the tough OCCAC Conference. Her play this year earned her an All-Freshman Team nod, landed her on the OCCAC Second-Team, as well as Division III All-District Team Honors. Coming back to school to follow her basketball dreams paid off for the 28-year old freshman, as she led her team with 350 points on the season. She also grabbed 173 rebounds (5.8 RPG), handed out 44 assists, and recorded 39 steals.

Hannah Oehlstrom garnered OCCAC Honorable Mention honors, an award she also earned as a freshman. Oehlstrom scored 264 points this year (9.1 PPG), had 131 rebounds, 57 assists, and 53 steals. She played in 56 games during her LCCC career and finishes with 658 points, 312 rebounds, 110 assists, and 111 steals.
