by Ken Hoffman
The Lorain County Community College women’s basketball had no answers for the offense of Owens Community College — the #6 team in NJCAA D-II — as the Express sprinted out to a 40-6 first quarter advantage on the way to a lopsided 117-39 win at LCCC on Saturday, February 3.
The Lady Commodores shot just 22.6% for the game, including 12% (3-of-25) in the second half. The taller Express also dominated the boards with a huge 64-29 margin.
Sophomore guard Carrie Carlson (pictured) led LCCC with 16 points plus four rebounds. Sophomore forward Angel Blakely — the team’s leading scorer, averaging 17 points per game — was limited to 11 points, but grabbed a team-high nine boards, just one rebound shy of a double-double. Freshman guard Hannah Oehlstrom managed eight points and four rebounds.
Freshman guard Da’Vina Shelton had a career game with a game-high and season-high 34 points on 12-of-24 shots including 6-of-12 from three-point range, plus 11 rebounds and four steals. Sophomore guard Essence Cowan tallied 23 points including 7-of-14 baskets beyond the arc.
In the first half, Owens hit a remarkable 13-of 21 shots from long range (61.9%). The Express shot 47% for the game and 39% on three’s, despite only making 3-of-20 (15%) in the second half.
LCCC — one of the few D-III teams in the OCCAC — owns a 5-16 overall record; 1-8 in the OCCAC. Owens improves to 18-4 and 8-1 in the OCCAC, one game behind 9-0 Sinclair. LCCC travels to Southern State CC for a 1 p.m. game on Sunday, Feb. 4, before visiting Cuyahoga CC on Wednesday, Feb. 7, for a 5:30 game at the Eastern Campus.
