February 2, 2019 – – The Lorain County Community College Women’s Basketball team faced a tough challenge in their second matchup this season against Owens Community College, a team with a nine-game winning streak on the line. In their first meeting, the Express put up 100 points in a 100-47 win at their home gym.

Despite scoring first, the Commodores came out a bit timid against the much taller team and quickly found themselves down in the game and at a 10-point deficit to end the first period of play.  LCCC started to find their rhythm in the second quarter but aggressive defensive play and eight first half steals by the Express helped them extend their lead to 42-18 at the break.

The Commodores came out hot in the second half with aggressive play of their own and quickly cut into the lead with a couple of three-pointers and key steals off their press, allowing LCCC to drive in for some easy buckets. Lorain won the third quarter scoring battle, with an 18-13 advantage over the Express.

Owens, a powerhouse program that just dropped down to Division III this year, regained their composure and beat Lorain’s press for several quick scores in the fourth period, but the Commodores played an evenly matched second half before falling by a final score of 79-50.

LCCC Coach, Dr. Vince Granito, commented after the game, “Transition defense and sloppy offense hurt us today, but I think we played well and definitely out-hustled them in the second half. We got beat by 50 the first time we played them and the deficit was 20 for most of the second half this time around. I’m very happy with our growth as a team.”

Tyeisha Sain (Bedford) led Lorain’s offense with 15 points, while Ronnette Rahmon-Sumlin (North Olmsted) added 10 points and a team-leading six rebounds.

Lorain drops to 9-12 and 3-6 in the OCCAC and Owens improves to 15-7 overall and 9-1 in conference play, extending their winning streak to 10 games.

LCCC hosts Bryant & Stratton at 5:30 p.m., Monday, February 4, 2019 at LCCC.
