LCCC Student-Athletes/Teams Earn 2019-20 Academic Honors

August 6, 2020 – (Elyria, Ohio)

Lorain County Community College student-athletes are receiving national and statewide recognition for their academic achievements during the spring semester and the full academic year.

Nine LCCC student-athletes earned National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-Academic Honors for the 2019-20 school year. In addition, the men’s and women’s cross country teams were nominated for NJCAA Academic Team of the Year Honors.  Numerous student-athletes also earned OCCAC and LCCC academic recognition.

“Student-athletes at Lorain County Community College put forth their best at all times – both on the field and in the classroom. This group of student-athletes demonstrate resiliency and commitment to academic and athletic excellence and are well-deserving of the accolades they have received both nationally and locally,” said Dr. Lisa Augustine, professor and program coordinator of LCCC’s Health Physical Education and Recreation division.

NJCAA All-Academic Teams

Placement on the NJCAA All-Academic Teams recognizes students who earn high GPAs during the academic year.

Volleyball player Lydia Solak (LaGrange), cross country runners Justin Below (Lorain), and Jason Molek (Wellington) garnered NJCAA First-Team recognition with a perfect 4.0 GPA for the year.

Volleyball and basketball two-sport athlete Ashley Elliott (LaGrange) and cross country runner Samantha Glass (Sheffield Lake) headed up the NJCAA Second-Team honorees for LCCC, which is awarded to students with a 3.80-3.99 GPA.

NJCAA Third-Team honors (3.60-3.79 GPA) went to volleyball and basketball two-sport athlete Myra McDonald (Avon); cross country runner Henry Haas (Wellington); women’s basketball player Kelsey Simmerly (Avon Lake); and men’s basketball center Derek Yahnke (Hilliard).

The men’s and women’s cross country programs earned recognition for their overall team GPA’s for the second year in a row. The men’s team carried a 3.29 overall GPA and the women’s team earned a cumulative 3.07 GPA.
