LCCC’s Lands Two on OCCAC Volleyball Team, Sullinger Earns All-Region
November 14, 2019 – – LCCC Sophomore Setter Kara Sullinger (North Ridgeville) and Freshman Middle Hitter Vanecia Billings (Lorain/Clearview) were selected to the OCCAC All-Conference Volleyball Team for the 2019 season. Sullinger earned OCCAC First-Team honors, as well as an NJCAA Division III All-Region XII nod, while Billings earned OCCAC All-Freshman Team honors and an All-Conference Honorable Mention selection.
Sullinger is a repeat OCCAC First-Team and All-Region selection after an outstanding rookie campaign where she led LCCC to a fifth-place finish in the 2018 NJCAA Division III National Tournament. Her performance in the tournament earned her a place on the All-Tournament Team and All-American Honorable Mention status.
In 2019, Sullinger ranked 17th nationally with 825 assists, 20th in service aces with 68, and 64th with 333 digs. Along with leading LCCC in those categories, Sullinger was tops on the team with a 0.213 attack percentage, put down 130 kills, and had 26 blocks.
“Kara deserves these honors because she was a leader both on and off the court and played hard every single point,” stated LCCC Head Coach Ted Whitsel. “Kara did whatever we needed her to do to give us the best chance to win.”
Billings wrapped up the season ranked 26th nationally in block assists and 29th in total blocks with 45 and 76, respectively. She was 67th in kills with 211, while leading LCCC in kills in the final 10 matches of the year. She was named OCCAC Division III Volleyball Player of the Week for the week of October 14-20, 2019.
Coach Whitsel said about Billings, “V really came on strong the second half of the season and was our go-to player. She has another season here and the sky is the limit.”
LCCC finished the year at 16-13. Five of those losses were at the hands of two of the top-ranked teams in the nation and conference foes, Owens CC and Columbus State CC. Both are competing at the NJCAA Division III National Tournament this weekend.
