Simon, Bene, Barrios and Colbert Among NJCAA, D-III Leaders; Commodores’ Hitting Ranks in Top 15; Pitching Among Top Half of Teams

Lorain County Community College baseball is well-represented in this week’s NJCAA D-III national baseball rankings.
Sophomore pitcher Kevin Simon has established himself as one of the top D-III hurlers in the nation. Simon is tied with two other pitchers for 2nd place with four complete games. Marco Becerril of Coastal Bend (TX) leads the D-III nation with five complete games. Simon’s Earned-Run-Average of 0.84 ranks 6th in D-III, allowing just three earned runs in 32 innings pitched. His 4-0 record is tied for 22nd and his 12.94 strikeouts per nine innings ranks 17th.
Sophomore pitcher Nick Bene is tied for 17th with two complete games pitched. His 11.12 strikeouts per nine innings ranks 39th. Bene owns a 2.78 ERA, good for 40th, allowing just seven earned runs in 22.2 innings.
The Commodores’ top hitter is freshman shortstop Jesse Barrios with a .441 batting average, ranking 35th in D-III. When you factor in players who have played in at least 20 games, Barrios ranks 14th. His .541 on-base percentage is 19th; 8th among players with at least 20 games to date. Barrios owns a slugging percentage of .721 which ranks 28th; 15th among players with at least 20 games. His four triples is tied for fourth in the nation.
Sophomore outfielder/first baseman Nate Colbert is tied for 28th with four home runs. He ranks 38th with a .671 slugging percentage.
As a team, LCCC hitters rank 14th in the nation with a strong .336 batting average. The team is in the top 10 (10th) among teams that have played a minimum of 20 games.
As a pitching staff, the Commodores rank 41st with 8.60 strikeouts per nine innings and 23rd among teams playing at least 20 games.
LCCC’s next game is Saturday, April 21 vs. Washtenaw (MI) CC at The Pipeyard in Lorain at 1 p.m.
