Simon, Bene Remain Among NJCAA D-III Pitching Leaders; Commodores Rank #29 Among 97 D-III Teams With .307 Team Batting Average

Sophomore pitchers Kevin Simon and Nick Bene remain among the statistical pitching leaders this week in the NJCAA D-III national rankings, while the team batting average of .307 ranks 29th among the 97 D-III teams (moving up from 40th last week).
Simon has pitched three complete games to date, ranking #2 in the nation (tied with eight others). Only one pitcher among the 97 baseball schools in D-III has more complete games ( five by Marco Becerril of Coastal Bend, TX). Bene is tied for 11th with two dozen other hurlers with two complete games.
Simon also ranks 6th in the D-III nation with an ERA (earned-run-average) of 1.08. His ERA ranks 3rd among pitchers with 25 or more innings pitched. Simon has allowed only three earned runs in 25 innings. Bene is 42nd with a 2.78 ERA. His ERA ranks 26th among pitchers who have tossed 20 or more innings. Bene has permitted only seven earned runs in 30 innings pitched.
Simon and Bene are also among the national leaders in strikeouts per nine innings. Simon ranks 25th with a lofty 11.88 strikeouts per nine innings (33 strikeouts — and 13 walks — in 25 innings) while Bene is listed 37th with 11.12 K’s per nine innings (28 strikeouts — and nine walks — in 22.2 innings). As a team, the Commodores rank 29th in the country with 9.28 strikeouts per nine innings.
The Commodores’ .307 team hitting average is paced by sophomore Ryan Danszczak who is batting .390. Sophomore Dalton Welty is second on the team with a .381 average. The other top hitters are sophomore Gavin Taulbee, .361; freshmen Jesse Barrios and Justin Ciccone, each hitting .333; and sophomore Nate Colbert, .326.
LCCC travels to OSU-Mansfield for a 1 p.m. doubleheader this Thursday, April 12.
